What is the Ideal Time to Start Training my pitbull puppy?

Training of your pitbull pitbull puppy should be started as early as possible but must be done gently.

Firstly to be taught, the pitbull pitbull puppy should trust in you. Like children, puppies have a short span of attention, growing bodies, and can only absorb when they comprehend what exactly they need to learn. The conditions must be just right.

Nevertheless, it is still true that training should start early. A process of ‘socialization’ could be commenced around eight weeks, simple orders such as ‘sit’ and ‘come’ from twelve weeks, and finally the more specific training could start at five to six months.

Even though you could possibly get going with early training immediately the pitbull puppy is brought home, it is from approximately nine to twelve weeks of age that the best time for actual obedience training emerges.

While training in itself covers a wide range of areas, I am by no means suggesting you should go to extremes and start agility training sessions for your pup at eight weeks! The beginnings of house training, and teaching the word ‘No!’ is the kind of basics you could start with.

Experts say the best time frame for puppies to be taught socialization which come next, is from three to sixteen weeks. This is when he will begin to learn to be a well-adjusted animal.

It is important to remember that pitbull socialization isn’t all about him being taught the correct fork to pick up at the dining table, but the much more valuable and permanent skill of being equipped with self assurance to handle any situation correctly, within every social environment he could happen to find himself in.

Even in a situation he is completely unfamiliar with, with any type of person, the well-socialized dog would react well. A dog that has been equipped with necessary social skills will not be easily startled and will recover fast even if he is. He will also display minimal or no fear at the presence of other animals, unknown people or strange objects.

A well socialized and adjusted dog will be unruffled in a range of situations and environments. There will be no fear even if he may display some excitement in a new surrounding. The secret in achieving this is to make sure as many new situations he is exposed to as possible are positive ones.

Even a short five or ten minute session of training each day with your pitbull puppy will make the difference to his social adaptability and skills.

You lesson session should be fun and not lengthy as your pitbull puppy’s attention span is small. The maturity of your individual pitbull puppy, breed and age are factors that will affect the length of attention span in any animal. However 5 to 10 minute sessions are safe.

Depending on the maturity and age of your own pup, the training sessions could progress to other basic commands like, Down, Heel, Sit etc.

You must also be realistic about the capabilities of your
