This is the last lesson will explain how to teach a pitbull to track motivated by drive, how to focus upon building drive, and also how to move on to a further level of difficulty.
A good friend that helps train your pitbull – Drive.
For all the different facets of a dog’s training, drive is your friend. Whether it is for sport protection, tracking,
competition jumping, or basic obedience – this is the component you will need.
The target of this training will be to build up your dogs drive, then use it to make any training exciting and fun.
What should I do if my dog does not seem to have any drive?
A step at a time is how you will build drive. Each one will contribute towards increasing drive and making it more and ore intense as you go on.
Some dogs are naturally predisposed in a way that doesn’t have much drive. I have no solution for this.
Building Drive One O One
This is an excellent technique for building drive.
You need a ball attached to a string and a long line. You will be playing a game of keep away with this string ball. Don’t hit or push your dog with. Keep on keeping it away from him. As you show and rapidly move it away from the dog again and again, soon the animal will try to take it from you.
Don’t let him have it under any circumstances.
As this continues, suddenly stop and command him to sit. When he obeys drop the ball into his mouth. Now the dog will try to take the ball away and play. Let him go for about a minute and then start pulling him closer with the long line you have him on. When he is close enough grab the ball from him by the string. He will try to get it again but more intensely this time. Repeat the whole process. Next time you grab the ball away, stop the game and put it away. This ball should not be given to him except when you are drive building. Repeat this game periodically and notice the dog’s intensity over the toy increasing gradually. You should get the dog to a pitch where he would do almost anything to get a hold of it.
When you have built the drive to this pitch and got him hungry for this toy use to advantage with tracking. Have the helper play this keep away game using this toy. Finally when the helper runs away the dog will track him.
Get some gloves, hold tight to the pitbull as he watches the helper run the first time. Gradually move and finally get the dog completely off the tracking course. On these more difficult tracks once the helper is found the dog should be allowed to play a game of keep away and then keep the toy for a few minutes. He will strut proudly with the toy. After the exercise tell the dog to drop it and then put it away.
