Each living being has a temperament, it is not exclusive to us humans alone, dogs in particular have their own temperaments and you might well be familiar with it, if you have previously lived with a canine pet. You might well know some aspects of dog or Pitbull temperament. To someone who does not have an idea what temperament exactly means I just want to give you the definition from dictionary about what is temperament?
It is defined as the innate aspect of an individual’s personality; it is further defined as something which is genetically present and acquired through the means of learning, it connotes to a personality or character of an individual. Now, if you are still not clear I better ask you to look on the internet and read material on temperament and clear off any misconceptions.
While the above is the most common description to temperament the other sly aspects to behavior particularly the canines could be categorized into fear, aggressiveness, shyness, willingness, courage and curiosity.
If you are buying a Pit Bull or rescuing it from a breeder temperament of the Pet is the most important aspect to consider while making the decision. Now, what is the basic difference between buying a rescue Pit Bull and a breeder (Puppy)? In the later case you have the assurance from the person you are buying the Pet that it is well groomed and in the former case you are adopting a new born who needs extra care and time to know and do things. So, here there is the factor of temperament which has taken precedence over each other while buying a rescued pet or taking a breeder.
Citing the above example, we could say that temperament is shaped by both genetics and life experiences. How a 3 years old pet will react to a certain situation will entirely vary from a 2-4 month old puppy.
How you can Identify Proper Pit Bull Temperament
Proper Temperament of canines includes:
- Strong nerves: You can identify Pit Bull temperament by observing its behavior when confronted with unfamiliar and distressful noises, it may be fearful at first but will quickly venture out its inquisitive sense to know what is happening around and if there is a threat coming from any where.
- Friendly and outgoing: Pit Bulls have an out going nature hence even with strangers they will be comfortable and will not exhibit a total caution, they love people just as others do.
If you notice any Dog which does not socialize with people or shows signs of fear then I presume the pet has not been properly allowed to socialize and hence such a temperament fear shows up. Chances are it might have been abused by humans that make it wary of human presence.
Animal aggression: Aggressiveness in dogs is considered normal and is associated with its breed, they show common behavioral traits like barking while seeing a stranger in front, and will calm down when asked to do so. If by any reason the Pet does not respond to such instances like strangers coming home and it does not behave overtly you need to see the pet with the vet for counseling. It is considered an abnormal behavior.
