Well dog fighters do use spring poles. And I do too.
In fact nearly every person I know uses them.
And by the way, I don’t know a single dog fighter.
‘Humane’ organizations called PETA circulate these lists containing a load of misleading and rubbishy information on ‘dog fighting signs’. If those people saw my yard they would certainly report me on this count. After all I have more than a single Put Bull and also a spring pole.
These are both on the list of signs.
The Spring Pole
There’s nothing fantastic about a spring pole. It is nothing more or less than a tool with which to exercise a pitbull.
Every month I receive a dozen questions on the subject. Usually from people who want to find out how to make one.
Here is an additional method to the ones detailed in books:
The Concept
Any ‘bite surface’ or something the dog can get a hold of and tug on, and is attached to a spring which provides resistance as the dog pulls, is a spring pole.
How to Make One
Attach a spring to a toy. Too simple? Well that’s about the size of it.
Complicated structures are sometimes built but its amazing how a really simple one will achieve what you want. Pictures of my own spring pole will help guide you to make your own. My first picture shows the complete set up. The second picture shows how it is attached to stuff. My preference is branches of trees etc which can be taken on outdoor excursions, but you can use almost anything you like that is strong enough. The third picture shows the clip which attaches the toy. If you are using a rope toy its simple to clip it on the knot. If you want it more complicated you can innovate. I have a five dollar rope toy I got at the pet store as well as a fancy rope toy like a triangle.
Set Up Details
I had trouble building my very first spring pole till I found a power leash setup, and then I only had to assemble the whole thing in a secure and portable unit. I like carrying it with me and showing people who are amazed about the abilities of the dogs. My set up in the pictures consists of a toy, one snap carabineer, two locking carabineers, as well as three carabineers and a spring.
Pitbulls love Spring Poles
A pitbull gets the taste of ancient habits when working with a spring poles. It also helps burn energy.
The spring pole does not cause a dog to snap or be aggressive. If the dog does, he was unsound anyway.
For better safety keep it low so the dogs back feet touch the ground. If your dog has displayed serious hanging abilities you could raise it a little.
Check with Vet
Always have your dog checked before starting a program that works them hard. A vet should examine heart, lungs and joints to commence the check up.
