In their endevour to preserve the traits of ancient Bulldogs breeders concentrated on preserving the unique physical characteristics of that dog. That dog had unsurpassed stamina, agility and adaptability. The mental pitbull profile of the pitbulls is also exceptional - fighting spirit, agression, bravery and cold-blooded determination. The looks had no effect on the quality, apart from cases of visible (genetic mostly) malformations which would lead to lower-quality offspring. The history of thousand years of breeding, still on-going nowadays, has resulted in a standard, which, unlike cynology standards, evaluates only the character traits, which are not visible. The zest to fight is the name of the breed, and its lack or deficiency contradict the standard. Of course, some pitbull breeders have been tempted to breed dogs that would have certain features, such as a massive head, thick bones, square body, wide chest, powerful necks but in practice the outcome would soon chill their enthusiasm. Pitbulls with thin bones, cat-like paws, with frail, flat chests and long scrawny necks would win battles due to their fighting stamina. Things are far from being simple as pittbulls with the powerful builds, mentioned above, would also possess the enthusiasm to fight, the hard, destructive bite would be a dream come true for breeders who want to acquire the perfect pitbull. I will provide the American standard for pitbulls. Never forget that the pitbull is English, and the structure must reflect the nature of the dog and its predicament to win.
