The Pit Bull Terrier, originating in the United States, is classified by the AKC as the American Staffordshire Terrier, but as the American Pit Bull Terrier by the UKC. The Pit Bull Terrier lives approximately 12 years. The American Pit Bull is a medium-sized, muscular dog that is a bit longer than it is tall. The large, broad head appears to look like a wedge and the muzzle is shorter than the length of the skull. With a well developed, strong lower jaw, the Pit Bull has an excellent face. Its nose is large and can be many colors. The eyes are any color except blue and are set low. American Pits Bull have muscular hindquarters and a deep chest. While thePit Bull Terrier is fairly free of genetic weakness, they do have some health concerns, just as all dogs. Some specific issues to watch for are: allergies, cataracts, or hip dysplasia.
Although some have labeled Pit Bulls as overly aggressive, they are not that way by nature. In fact, they are known for their intelligence and loyalty. American Pit Bull Terriers make excellent, loving and protective companion. When a puppy is properly socialized and handled, even with minimum training, it will become a tranquil, good, obedient, companion dog. While the American Pit Bull Terrier is friendly toward people, it can often be aggressive to other dogs especially others of the same sex.
The requires regular brushing with a bristle brush or a good rub down with a chamois or towel. This will keep the coat shiny and clean. Baths are done only when necessary.
They need a large amount of vigorous exercise and they need to be on-leash when doing so. American Pit Bull Terrier enjoys running along side a bicycle. A home with a fenced yard is the best choice for a workout spot for your dog. The American Pit Bull Terrier is not the breed for you if you lack commitment to spend time training and exercising this high-energy, excellent watch dog.
Pit Bull Terriers are extremely intelligent and can learn quickly with firm, yet loving training. They have received an unfair amount of publicity over the years stating that they are aggressive, vicious animals. They reality is that they want to please their owner. So, if the owner wants a calm, loving dog, he will train him that way. If he wants an aggressive “attack” animal, then he will train him that way. The American Pit Bull Terrier is a dog that wants to please its master. It is only a product of how it is treated from the time it is a puppy.
